Case Study

Paper Moon Graphic Supply Type Foundry

Challenge: It's hard to plan for everything, like a pandemic when your freelance career is just getting off the ground. But that is what happened. Within a week, I went from having about 15 big projects in the pipeline to having only one medium size project for a summer camp that needed to move its sessions online due to the pandemic. What's a designer to do?

Outcome: First, you don't just sit around; you pivot and make something happen. With the downtime, I dove in and helped Camp Flix shift their classes online by developing new email marketing campaigns (Click to view Camp Flix case study). Then, I updated my limited-edition dinosaur model kit online shop with a bunch of new kits I had just finished (Click to see them at jurassicarts.com). And finally, I started an independent type foundry to sell typefaces I worked on over the past few years. All three were a success.

Building the Website

In creating an online shop, one of the first things you must do is decide what platform you will use. I had several options, from products like Squarespace or Shopify to using a third party like Creative Market or Monotype.

I chose Shopify for my e-commerce store because it had more flexibility with design versus Squarespace. I also applied to become one of Creative Market's vendors and was accepted after about two months due to COVID-related backlogs in the approval process.
2022 was a big year. I was approved to sell fonts on all Monotype online stores. The Hallmark Channel licensed my DoorBuster sign painter font collection for their movie "Hanukkah on Rye." I designed a custom font for The Rosenbach Library & Museum's "Dracuthon" event.
